International trade has recently become ever so vital for the Costa Rican economy and they have taken some very extreme measures to make sure they can take advatage of as many free trade agreements world wide as possible.

Costa Rica Trading goes back at least when spaniards colonized this region (Colombus on his 4th voyage), today trade continues to be of major importance to Costa Rica.

The Costa Rican government has taken a lot of care over the last few years with the PLN in power making sure that Costa Rica holds a strategic position to help further their economic success on a world scale even though they are an extremely small country they would like to have a very large impact. They even broke year long agreements with Taiwan to switch over to trading with China.

CAFTA-DR

This free trade agreement with North America was for a long time a HUGE seed of contention that divided Costa Ricans into two distintive camps: those in favor of the agreement and those opposed. The CAFTA-DR in Costa Rica is known as the TLC (tratado de libre comercio). NO a TLC is something that is seen spray painted all over town and on many people's bumper stickers.
