Finca Luna Nueva Lodge (From $45)

The Finca Nuevo Luna Lodge is set 10 miles from the Arenal Volcano in the Northern Lowlands Region of Costa Rica. As one of the country’s most fecund areas, it is no surprise that travelers relish the bounty, beauty, and abundance of outdoor activities that are found here.

Set at the base of the Arenal Volcano, the small town of La Fortuna is stocked with every conceivable amenity that travelers require. Tours can be arranged, groceries can be bought, and massages can be had at a cheap price. However, truly it is the surrounding natural areas that bring people here. The volcano itself is always in sight (assuming that clouds aren’t hanging too low any particular day), and there are nearby trails, rivers, and lakes to play in. Water sports on Lake Arenal include canoeing, fishing, and kite surfing. Back on land visitors can dabble in a range of recreational opportunities, including white-water rafting, horseback riding, canopy tours, waterfall repelling, and more. Finally, this area is widely known for its abundance of geothermal hot springs. After a day spent exploring the surrounding area, a dip in one of these pools is undoubtedly the best way to relax.

Finca Nuevo Luna Lodge rests on 200 acres of primary rainforest. Both an eco-lodge and an organic farm, Finca Nuevo has been farming organically and promoting sustainable agriculture since 1994. Today, it shows: guests can explore the property’s immaculate rainforest through well built trails, eat gourmet meals prepared from produce raised organically on the farm, and wander through the Sacred Seeds Sanctuary, where over 300 species of tropical medicinal plants are maintained. The property also borders the 50,000-acre Children’s Eternal Rainforest, a conservation area that sprawls over several habitat zones, protecting the burgeoning plant and animal species that call the rainforest home.

The lodge itself is constructed in a rustic yet luxurious fashion, built from fallen timber found on the farm’s property. Accommodations are spacious, wooden, and unpretentiously classy. The two houses have expansive decks that overlook the rainforest and surrounding hillsides, and all accommodations come equipped with private hot water bathrooms, comfortable beds, and both indoor and outdoor seating areas.  Guests are invited to cool off in the lodge’s swimming pool or wind down in the heated Jacuzzi. If further relaxation is in order, a trip to the Luna Nueva Rainforest Spa comes highly recommended, where traditional massages and other holistic wellness services can be enjoyed. A complimentary breakfast is served every morning, with lunch and dinner offered at affordable prices. As the meals are created using food from the garden, the menu varies depending on what is being harvested.

Finca Nuevo Luna Lodge also offers tours of both the farm and surrounding areas with highly trained bilingual guides. Additionally, they offer classes in sustainable living, preservation of natural resources, gourmet cooking, and more.
