From Mammals, Lizards and Amphibians, Insects and Reptiles to the richest marine life on its Caribbean and Pacific Oceans and many streams, rivers and lakes. Costa Rica is one of the best places on earth to explore and experience wildlife in its most concentrated form in terms of biodiversity within a relatively tiny space.

Costa Rica is known for its diversity in Animals, it's fish who inhabit both the fresh and salt waters have made Costa Rica a name. Mammals such as Jaguars and Whales leave a strong impression on all those who were lucky enough to encounter them. Birds have found their homes amongst the many coastal and terrestrial protected areas throughout Costa Rica. Reptiles and Amphibians are frequently seen everywhere. And, the multitude of Insects and other arthropods keeps people in awe as well.

Fish

Costa Rica has one of the fish richest waters in the world. Birds

Costa Rica has a great diversity of birds (more than 850 species), which are relatively well studied. Aproximately 600 species remain in Costa Rica permanently while the remaining 150 are transitory and stop off in Costa Rica during mass migrations. Most of the migratory birds have their breeding areas in North America. Resident birds have local movements within the territory, in response to seasonal changes that affect the abundance of food (nectar, fruits, insects).

Reptiles & Amphibians

Reptiles and Amphibians are the most colorful and mysterious "herpetofauna" creatures of Costa Rica. They range in size from the huge sea turtles to the fingernail-size frogs. The herpetofauna also evokes a mixture of feelings in the people: some are charmed by the colors of the arboreal frogs, while some are terrified by the presence of even an inoffensive snake. Costa Rica has a great diversity of reptiles including: 14 species of turtles, about 70 species of lizard, more than 200 species of snake, and 2 species of crocodile. Amphibians are also very diverse with about 130 species of frog, 37 of salamander and 4 of caecilian. The Costa Rican herpetofauna (reptiles and amphibians) is relatively well-known, but even nowadays new species are discovered, especially in the Talamanca Range. Mammals

Costa Rica has about 240 species of mammals (about 6% of the world’s mammals), and most of which are bats (109 species). Mammals are not as easy to watch as birds or reptiles, because most of them are nocturnal, cryptic and easily detect the presence of people. Therefore, they are always hiding or running away. Nonetheless, there is a good chance to see coatis, deer, sloths, opossums, monkeys, agoutis, raccoons, peccaries, and bats.

Insects & Other Anthropods
