Barra Del Colorado
Located near the northern tip of the Caribbean Coast, this region barriers the frontier zone along Nicaragua's border. Barra del Colorado is a Wildlife Refuge on the most northern part of Costa Rica's Caribbean Coast. Hundreds of miles of water channels allow for plenty of water excursions to experience the wildlife of this very diverse area.
Rainfall here is a normal occurrence making this region hot, humid and marshy. It makes taking a boat as the only realistic way of reaching this area. It is so remote, that most people merely visit Tortuguero to the south. However, for the bold traveler, there can be huge rewards by seeing toucans, macaws, white hawks, big cats, sloths, caimans, and manatees. A bit difficult to get to, but impossible to forget.
