Exports

The Costa Rican government has been taking some drastic measures to increase their amount of exports to the world markets and try and diversify their product range to help improve their economy after the global economic crisis.

2010 marks the year of recovery of Costa Rica’s exports. They are trying to do everything in their power to revitalize this economic sector and return to or better levels of production and exchange to levels pre-global crisis.

The largest percentage of exports from Costa Rica are in the manufacturing sector, closely follwed by the agricultural sector. Costa Rica's main exports include:coffee, bananas, pineapples, melons, ornamental plants, sugar, corn, rice, beans, potatoes, dairy, seafood, poultry, beef, timber textiles, clothing, electronic components, microprocessors, food processing, medical equipment, construction materials, plastic products, fertilizer, and, electricity. Costa Rica exports about $8 billion worth of good annually. Costa Rica's main trade partners include: The United States,  El Salvador, Guatemala, China, Germany, Netherlands, United Kingdom, France,  Italy, Mexico, and Canada.

According to the CIA world factbook for Costa Rica's most recent figures, the country exports about 2117 bbl/day in oil, and 77.16 million kWh in electricity.

The main government agency responsible for promoting Costa Rican products abroad is called PROCOMER which stands for “Promotora del comercio exterior de Costa Rica.” To find out more about what PROCOMER is doing you can visit there official website by clicking here PROCOMER recently released a statement in the press saying that in January of 2010 they accumulated a value of $727.9 million dollars which has significantly increased about 22% from $133.5 in January of 2009. Much of this increase is attributed to the exportation of many food products and also exportation of electrical components such as microprocessors. The reason Costa Rica has been so successful with their exports is due to diversification of products.

 

This year PROCOMER will also be teaming up with ICT (Costa Rica’s Tourism Board) to host an international investment fair on April 14th and 15th of 2010 at the Ramada Herradura Conference Center to promote Costa Rica. PROCOMER in collaboration with ICOEX “Instituto de Comercio Exterior de Costa Rica” they have brought in over 200 specialists in different industries to help strengthen through education small & medium sized companies in Costa Rica
