Imports

Costa Rica is fairly conservative and attempts to not import as much, especially coming out of the world crisis, but consumer demand drives the need for international product and Costa Rica is a very capitalistic culture who are always wanting the newest, the most technological, and the best.

Costa Rica each year imports billions of dollars of goods into the country despite being a rather small country. The annual growth rate of importation is around 18%.  Costa Rica mainly imports from the following countries:

  • The United States (over 40% of all imports): manufactured products, machinery, transportation/construction equipment, chemicals, foods, fertilizer, consumer goods, and appliances.
  • Mexico
  • Guatemala
  • Venezuela
  • Germany
  • Japan
  • China
  • Brazil

Costa Rica also imports heavily raw materials, consumer goods, capital equipment, construction materials, and petroleum.

The Costa Rican government is trying very hard to limit the amount of imports to a reasonable number to try and recover from the global economic crisis. One example of this is that in 2010 they are planning to import 50% less automobiles than in prior years.

According to the CIA World factbook, Costa Rica imports about 47,860 bbl/day and imports 203.2 million kWh which cost over $10 billion dollars annually.
