Ostional Wildlife Refuge
The Ostional Wildlife Refuge is a Wildlife refuge of Costa Rica, part of the Tempisque Conservation Area since 1982. It includes a protected maritime zone into sea. Mainly to protect important nesting grounds of the marine turtle "Lepidochelys olivacea".
Ostional National Wildlife Reserve (about 4,000 hectares / 10,000 acres) was established in order to protect this vital nesting site for ridley, leatherback, and green turtles. Also coatis, monkeys, kinkajous, and much more other wildlife can be found here.
As many as 120,000 ridley turtles are to be seen here annually. Separated by two-to for-week intervals between July and December each year.
A bus runs here daily from Santa Cruz at noon during the dry season; it can be approached by road either from Santa Cruz through Marbella (dry season through) a river (dry season only) or from Nosara.
