If the direct bus schedule does not work with your plan, there is another option to take the Bus from San José to Puntarenas which departs every 40 min from the bus terminal at Avd 12, Calle 16.
Once in Puntarenas you take the Ferry to Paquera. In Paquera at the ferry terminal there are busses to take you to Cobano and on to Montezuma. The last bus from Paquera is at 6:30 p.m. It fits the ferry departing Puntarenas at 5:00 p.m. If you are on a later ferry you will need to get a taxi to Montezuma which will cost around $ 40 and take 1 to 1.5 hours to get to Montezuma.
