Puerto Jimenez - Puntarenas - Costa Rica. If you are looking for beautiful water, mangrove swamps, and a taste of Costa Rica's "wild west," Puerto Jimemez is a gold mine...literally.

Dating back to the early 1900's, this small village developed rapidly after gold was found in the local streams and rivers.  Logging also became a predominant trade in this area helping it to grow.  The days of the gold rushers has ended, and now the tourists rush to this area in hopes of landing a prize winning fish, or their adventures in the swamp.

As with most towns located on the Golfo Dulce, there are plenty of mangroves and marshy areas around, mixed with good swimming at the nearby Playa Plantanares.  Along with this type of landscape comes spectacular wildlife such as wild Macaws, crocodiles, and abundant fish life.  Many people come here while heading to Corcovado National Park or are planning to visit the Herrera Gardens and Conservation Project.  This reserve is a reforestation project features several hiking trails and a canopy tour through the lush gardens and rainforest.
