Things to Do and See in Playa Hermosa

It may seem obvious, but if you are into surfing this is a beach you cannot miss as it was the site for the 2009 Billabong International Surf competition. Other than surfing, you can get a great tan on this unique black sand beach that offers very little shade. If you are an animal lover you can also volunteer at the Hermosa refuge and release baby sea turtles.

There are basically 4 main activities you can do while at Playa Hermosa:

  1. Surf
  2. Sun bathe
  3. Volunteer helping the refuge with sea turtles
  4. Chill out and enjoy bars or entertainment in nearby Jaco'

Surf

Surfing at Playa Hermosa is world reknowned. Playa Hermosa was selected as the site for the 2009 Billabong International Surf Competition due to its spectacular waves.

Sun bathe

If you worship the sun, Playa Hermosa is the perfect place to get a great tan or a horrible sun burn. Beacause the sand here is volcanic and dark black in color it attracts the sun, so the best times to be out are very early in the morning before 10am otherwise you are likely to get burnt as this beach offers very little shaded area.

Volunteer helping the refuge with sea turtles

If you would like to volunteer and give back to the community, you can help the local Hermosa animal refuge with various environmental projects. The refuge has been trying to implement beach clean up and a recycling prohram. Also, one of the most rewarding things you can do is work with the sea turtles releasing them into the ocean when they are born.

Chill out

Hermosa Beach has a very laid back, hang lose, surfer attitude. If you need to disconnect, relax, and chill out, Hermosa Beach is the ideal place to take a load off. If you like to practice yoga on the beach you can. You can also find a local hammock to read a book or take a nap in. To go out and endulge in lots of action nearby Jaco' is most likely ones best bet.
